wow...i've been awol for a while...

I'm baaacck... hope someone notices... Ive been a little busy and self absorbed I guess. we had our vacation and our room is gorgeous now. i feel like a grown up (finally at almost 50 yrs old) we have actual matching dressers and an organized closet. no more dumping grounds for our room. gonna have a nice relaxing beautiful bedroom to retreat to when needed. love the wood floor until lucy (our little dog) gets excited and wants out in the middle of the night. all I hear is click click clickity click till i get out of bed and let her out... crazy.

also, attended a quilt retreat in temecula and have some pics to share, but they are on my blackberry and somehow I've forgotten how to upload from there again, so they are on facebook instead.

got two swaps out in the mail...one for the doll quilt swap and one for " a piece fo work" where one member sends fabric to everyone and what kind of block they want.

AND i had surgery yesterday to remove 1/2 my thyroid and a nodule since the needle biopsy came back with "bad cells" now they will do a full biopsy, but I won't know how results until at least next week. so you should see me more in the next two weeks since I will be home for a change...

thinking happy thoughts and looking forward to getting lots of sewing done and enjoying my time off as much as i can. will post pictures tomorrow hopefully

woo hoo, got one button working. I joined 2 swaps. A piece of work - someone in the group sends you fabric and what type of block they would like and the size. this time it's a wonky log cabin 12 1/2 square. i can add whatever fabric i want except vintage (which i don't have - works for me) and black. no problem. this is for August, and on flickr several people have already finished. gotta get this one done before saturday or on sat night.

the other one is doll quilt swap 7, i've been drooling over these swaps for a while and finally got a chance to join. my partner likes the same colors/style that I do so it shouldn't be too crazy hard to make something she will like. i think I will like working on smaller quilts, so I can get something done from start to finish.

leftover squares project

I had some charm squares left over and tried using them for a wall hanging , but not sure how well it's working. i don't think there's enough contrast in a lot of the blocks. my son re-arranged them (the top picture) and it looks better, but still not enough contrast. and of course its short one block! maybe if I take out some of the ones w/o enough contrast and let it be smaller it might work. I'm gonna keep playing with it and see what I can get. what do you think??
any suggesstions? I do have some border fabric that is blue with flowers from the same line, maybe make some pinwheels and use the blue for sashing...too many choices! not a bad thing really..

finished wedding ring blocks (not traditional, but you can still see the rings) in black/red/whiteone in progress, kitties!
3 block parts, lots of trimming to do...not looking forward to trimming 48 1/2 square triangles!
quilting the cheese and crackers quilt, it really isn't that wrinkled!

the colors are so different in each set I sent, hopefully the other swappers will like them both. I had some left over charm squares and had an idea for using them up. next post will show them with 2 ideas for how to set the squares. My son didn't like my first set up, so he suggested another. he has a good eye. I'll show you both and see which one people like the most. maybe even give a prize if I get a lot of votes... hmmm how to do that? I do have some bags, and an apron that I could give away.

i've been cleaning/organizing again... I REALLY need to give some fabric away. I think I will start with some scraps left from quilts and other projects I've made. there's some really cool (in my opinion, of course) fabric that someone else might love too.

so I better get to blogging more often instead of just reading and commenting on other blogs :)

here's what I made for Molly on the nancy drew swap. I made a nancy drew doll - dressed oh so chic in polka dots and ric rac and of course a little ladybug on her belt, a journal/photo album to keep notes or photos from detecting. in the back of the journal is the "missing map" (probably the only item that is truly "connected" to the book I chose. Nancy of course needs a bag to hold all her clues and supplies, a pen, and a notebook. and of course a zippered bag for to keep small things from getting away. Nancy loves tea (I think!) so I thought this fabric was perfect. hope you like it Molly!

I'm trying to use up some of my fabric and kits and not buy more fabric (ok, I'm trying!) here's the center portion and I'm not liking it too much at this stage. I will post some more pics now that I've finished the borders and put the backing together. I should be able to pin it this weekend and get busy quilting. Hopefully it will sell...
I've been scanning old photos to maybe make some digital photo albums (if I can figure out how). I have an album that my mom made for me and one that she made for my oldest brother. there are some really cool photos that I had not seen before - I'm the youngest, and hadn't seen so many pics of my mom and dad from before I was born. some of them are from before they were married and when my sister and brother were babies. my album has more of my second brother with me since we are only 3 years apart, and more of my dad than I had realized. he passed away when I was 5 so I really don't remember him. I'll share some pics once I get more scanned.

boy am I late posting this! Molly sent me this package for the Nancy Drew swap, she was so creative on this. there was a word search for smart detectives like Nancy drew, a magnifying glass , change purse for phone calls (no cell phones!) little book for notes, some nancy drew postcards, pen for taking notes, bookmark tagb with a supply list , a boat and map, whew and if that was not enough some bling for me! cute earrings and a necklace.
very cool. unlike me, she mailed this package on the day it was supposed to be mailed! I hope she likes her package as much as I love mine.

whew a lot to catch up on. I've been sewing and cleaning out the bedroom so we can install/continue the wood floor into our bedroom. my new sewing room has a great wood floor and we brought it out into our little hallway, but had not finished up with our bedroom. it's been a year and a half, we were supposed to install it last summer, but I had an emergency surgery and couldn't lift anything. so now we are tossing and storing so we can work on our vacation in August, it will be worth it though since our room is really bad. never upgraded, every other room has been, but not ours. typical I think. so in order to avoid cleaning, I've been sewing a LOT....

this is my youngest granddaughter in a dress I made. it looked really easy and is reversible too! she liked it, when she tried it on she said ooooh it's cute! made my day for sure!

oh, wait that's lucy...nothing to do with sewing! lucy got a haircut and some cute bows, not sure she's all that happy! oh look, some storage stuff from the bedroom. cool additions to the living room huh? I made this top from an online tutorial, summer ruffle sleeve top(?) - I'll have to find the actual name and link to the tutorial. I REALLY don't do clothes, but this seemed so easy. I like it but need to fix the straps. I've actually finished the hem, but have taken the straps out and will take another pic when it is actually complete. I left the ruffles off since I will wear a sweater or jacket over it. not looking too great sleeveless LOL

these were supposed to be my disappearing 9 patch swap with aunt pitty pat, but there's only 36 and we need 40. so it will be a throw, lap quilt for someone...not sure who yet.

well gotta get some sleep so I can get up and get to work in the morning...

what an angel! no, not me...Marcel of Aunt Pitty Pat's blog angeled this apron for me. I love it, the colors are very cool and I love the buttons. must have been a shirt or dress. way cool. she also sent me a bag with a button closure. AND a teabag holder with the cutest felt flower on it. I love those and have wanted to make one for a while now.

which is a new kind of swap for me. its still some handmade and I'll do some altering of things, but no aprons! all my swaps so far have been aprons except the annie doll swap. I'm going to get started on both today, but I need to do some research on my nancy drew book. its the Quest of the missing map, that should be lots of fun.

I've mailed out my annie and upcycle apron swaps and the post office shows they were delivered, now I'm checking my mail for packages!

Here she is, with arms and all dressed up! I was too afraid to paint a face on, so I used buttons for the eyes and embroidered a mouth. I looked at the dolls posted on flicker and their faces came out so cute! maybe next time I make one I will try painting the face...I don't think my partner will mind, I think she's very cute. it was really hard to send her off to someone else.

my up cycle apron swap was delivered today according to the USPS, but if my partner hasn't seen it yet, I hope she doesn't look here!
I used a skirt that I loved the flowers and ladybug, but didn't particularly like the skirt. I was thinking about making a bag, but then this swap came along. I hope my partner likes it.

I used my new ruffler foot to add the ladybug ruffle at the bottom. the pockets are too deep I think, but i didn't want to lose any of the flowers. I learned a lot having to take something apart and put it back together as something else! I didn't want the edges to be ugly so I used some binding to make the side seams clean. the people at work liked it, and couldn't believe I had to send it off to someone else. Now i can look forward to getting my apron :)

Annie and my up-cycled apron are in the mail. I dropped them off at the post office today. should arrive at their new homes Sat or Monday. I'm not a good swapper in the "extras" department. I forgot to even include a little notecard! i get so wrapped up in making sure they go out by the deadline I forget all the extras like wrapping it in tissue even. oh well, I hope that my swap partners like the apron, or annie so much they won't care. I did include something extra that I make not related to the swap at all, but something pretty and useful.

well onto the swap, disappearing 9 patch. I'm gonna get started early so our swap mama has plenty of time to put everything together!

i'll post pics once my partners receive their goodies.

here's a sneak peek of my annie doll, i made the dress and didn't like it so I made it again. then I made bloomers, but they were too tight, so I made another pair that turned out much cuter and not quite so snug! so she has her clothes and some hair, but still no face yet. this picture shows her in just her bloomers and no arms! poor baby...
sorry about the glare on the first pic, but it is just a sneak peak, so once my partner gets her I can put up a better pic.

ok here's the REAL obsessive part. the last post showed what I had already finished, but this pic shows those AND all the unfinished eggs and birds. i'm such a psycho when I get into something. I did give the grandkids the finished eggs and birds on easter. i'll have plenty of eggs for next year. at least the birds aren't associated with the holidays.

some more birds, eggs and annie parts... once I make something I like, I can't stop.

my sis did find an egg today, and searched for the other two once I told her there were more. they (her and her husband) found them. It was fun, now she has a bowl with some cute egss in it for easter.
went to the red sox/angels game and it was great! it came down to the last inning, last strike/out with the bases loaded. so exciting! lucky for me the sox won!! so my streak stays alive, whenever I go to the game the red sox win.

well it's been a quiet couple of days, I went to carlsbad and stayed with my sister and her husband wed and thursday night. I had to deliver some workshop materials to a conference for work in san diego, so what the heck a little time off was good. I've been working on more eggs and birds, I left a few eggs at my sisters -hidden of course. I wonder how long it will take her to notice.

I mailed the aprons today, finally. sorry it took me so long.

I've been working on my annie doll too, she's a lot smaller than I imagined from the sample photos. she's coming along, I'm stuffing her now.

I'm going to see the red sox tomorrow night, GO SOX, at angels stadium. my brother is taking me and he's a huge angels fan. oh well, i love my red sox, can't get me to switch.

I've been making some eggs (from retro mama) and a couple of birds (from spool) just having way too much fun checking out blogs. I saw the birds on Yarni Gras! blog (with link to spool) and just had to try it. the eggs are not very egg shaped, but I think I figured out why. I'm going to try some more this weekend.

got these boxes at the swap meet, thought they might make some cool sewing kits. not sure, but that's my first idea. i want to sand them down and stain them with the ikea stain - green and blue so far. I might also decopauge since I have 4 to play with. not sure what they were used for, but looks like som kind of medical testing. only 2 boxes actually have writing the other two are blank (just numbered lines). we're getting the stain this weekend, so i'm going to try it on one.

whew, I should keep up with my blog and not just wander over to everyone else's blogs. It's so nice to get comments and know that people actually visited me.
AND, I have two people already for my pay it forward!!!! I'm so excited. I hope I get one more soon, but I'm already checking out their blogs and thinking what they might like to get.

thanks for the comments on my projects...I love the coffee rag quilt and am glad others do too. this one was cotton, not flannel and I love the look so much. I made one a few years ago and my youngest son (23 years young!) loved it so much he decided I had made it just for him. he's so funny, he has the most quilts of anyone in my family. he even helped me with the quilting on the first quilt I made him. we call that one the tranquilizer quilt because anyone that uses it falls asleep after just a few minutes. it comes in handy with cranky grandkids that need a nap!
If you do make one, please don't wash it at home the first time! go to the laundromat so you don't clog up your pipes. you can dry at home, but you have to clean the lint thingie every 10 - 15 minutes. after that first time you can wash at home.

two quilts, the coffee house rag quilt is finished, i love the colors. I used charm squares and REALLY underestimated how many I needed. I wanted it to be long enough for my 6 foot husband to cover up with. he loves it too. the sock monkey quilt is getting there, the main part is finished, I made the piano keys borders, they just need trimming. I just need to cut the inner border, the sock fabric, then I can add the inner and outer borders. hopefully this one won't just join the other tops in a pile that need to be quilted. I will keep it at my house for when the grandkids come over. there's never enough blankets to go around.

here's some things I've made recently and some I'm working on. I made a diaper bag with some cordoroy ladybug fabric (love ladybugs! and so does the new mom) and some burp pads. they don't match, but what the heck!

i'm working on a crocheted granny square throw. I had these yarns and was not sure what to do with them. I loved the colors, but wasn't sure how they would work together. I love how the colors are working...too bad my rows are kinda tweaked, but I still like it. got more pics to follow...

this is the apron I received for the hot drinks for hot mama's

my favorite hot drink is chai tea, so Jean gave me an apron with teapots and cups, and other tea related stuff on it. its so cute! the pockets have lace trim and the bottom hem has beads. way too cute! I brought it to work so I could get a picture and post it finally, and my co workers loved it too!
she also sent a teacup and saucer, some chai tea mix and some chocolate.

heres the hot drinks for hot mamas apron I made for Yvonne. i love this pattern, it was hard to give up this apron, I love it. Yvonne said she loves it too. I'm so happy that she loves it as much as I did. i made some towels to match.

I also made this apron for Bertha, she works with me and loves to cook. she makes the BEST salsa, we are always asking her to make it. its the BOMB! anyway, the apron is reversible, the other side is the plaid. this pattern isn't as easy as the other one, so there might not be too many more.

I signed up for another swap, so I need to start working on a sexy, cute, beautiful holiday apron. you can tell I haven't decided on the pattern, fabrics, embellishments yet. it should be a fun one!

it's done! I added a row of ruffles, thanks for all the suggestions. I didn't add fabric for a liner since I'm not sure how to do that without one or both fabric and yarn would get saggy. the apron is not too heavy or stretchy since it's cotton thread made for kitchen type stuff. I had made some washcloths, but got bored REALLY fast, so this apron was born.

I was checking out crocheted aprons and tried to find a pattern that was easy AND that I liked. no luck, so I'm trying to just make one. this is about 1/3 to 1/2 done and I am looking for comments. I promise I won't cry...just leave a comment - how you feel. would you wear it? give it as a gift? I'm thinking of putting a couple of rows of stripes across the bottom, or maybe just add more stitches to make if ruffly on the bottom. I'm open to suggestions.

well I'm finished with the apron and accessories for swap partner. it's going out late, but I really wanted to get the zippered bags done. last night I was getting them finished when one broke, so I finished them tonight. I made the apron from th "funked out apron" pattern. I had to make some changes but I think it came out really cool. i made two potholders (with the batting made to withstand heat) and two zippered bags. I hope she likes them and doesn't mind that they are late.

hi everyone, ha ha, well I was so excited that someone actually saw my blog! these pics are of the summer vacation swap that Shawnee, http://flirtyapronswap.blogspot.com hosted. I thought I gave my swap partner a hard assignment, but she (jean) of http://quiltingranny.blogspot.com/ did a super job! My dream vacation was to either go to new england in the fall or Ireland. the apron represents my fall vacation, but Jean also included some travel brochures from Ireland and (I forgot the mention this on the swap blog) a handmade recipe and sayings booklet representing both vacations! she really, really brightened my day. I got it just a couple of days after having to go back to work. In July I had a "surprise" surgery, but got 6 wonderful restive weeks at home. it was really hard to go back to work, harder than last year after my gastric bypass surgery. I have a crazy stressful job and this time I was not allowed to call work and they couldn't call me! too funny, but I really got to rest and recuperate. anyway getting this package really cheered me up. be back soon with pictures of the apron for my partner.

I made these beach bags for my grandkids, they use them all the time. I actually made the first 3 2 years ago, so I had to make another one for the baby. she's 2 and wants to take it with her everywhere. I just made 3 more for my other grandkids and 1 backpack for the only grandson. couldn't make him a bag! here's some pictures of the bags.
